Who this guide is for
Section actions
- Tenants considering a move
- Those who lose their jobs or are transferred and must leave
- Renters in co-location or furnished who wish to leave the lease
To be prepared in advance
Section actions
- The lease, to verify the notice and type (furnished/unfurnished)
- A new address for mail tracking (recommended)
- The rooms for the state of the exit places: keys, exits, new RIB
Step-by-step procedure
Section actions
- 1Determine the notice. In non-furnished: 3 months, reduced to 1 months in tense area (Lyon, Grenoble) or in case of job loss, first job, transfer, health beyond 60 years. Furnished: 1 months, always.
- 2Send the leave to the lessor by registered letter with acknowledgement of receipt or hand-delivery against discharge. Indicate the date of departure — the advance notice is short from receipt.
- 3Use a Public Service discharge template. Enter your contact information, the address of the accommodation, the expected date of departure and the reason for the reduction of the notice (if applicable).
- 4Agree on the state of the exit and the handing over of the keys. Without handing over the keys, the rental continues until this one.
- 5Keep the evidence: copy of the envelope, postmark, new RIB for the return of the security deposit. The lessor has 1 at 2 months after the exit state to return the deposit.
- 6Inform the CAF of your departure — otherwise the overpayment of the APL will turn into a debt (undu).
- 7In a co-location, check the solidarity clause: you can stay in solidarity for another time (see the dedicated guide).
Common mistakes
Section actions
- Report leave in court or by e-mail — without legal value. A recommendation with AR or a remission against discharge is required.
- Consolidate deadlines: Furnished — 1 months, unfurnished — 3 months (or 1 in tense/motif zone).
- Do not return keys in time — the lease runs until the keys are handed over.
- Forget to warn the CAF — hence an industry to pay back.
- Do not keep a copy of the leave and proof of dispatch — difficult to prove the date.
