Who this guide is for
Section actions
- You if you are ill and cannot work a few days or weeks
- You if you are an employer or HR and want to know your obligations
- You if you want to understand the calculation of the IJSS and your rights
To be prepared in advance
Section actions
- Social Security Number (Vital Card), RIB
- Contract and seniority (for the calculation of IJSS)
- Contact with the attending physician for the notice of cessation
Step-by-step procedure
Section actions
- 1Consult a doctor (contractor or other): he issues a notice of stoppage of work with time and reason. Since 2022, the procedure has been dematerialized — the doctor sends directly to the CPAM and the employer.
- 2Notify the employer from the first day of the stop: report the stop and the duration. Mode indicated in the contract/convention (often e-mail or corporate portal).
- 3The CPAM pays the daily allowance (IJSS): 50% of the gross daily wage, after a waiting period of 3 days (unpaid). In long-term arrest (≥ 6 months), IJSS may extend for up to 3 years in long-term illness.
- 4Employer supplement: with a seniority of ≥ 1 year and certain conditions of agreement, the employer completes up to 90% gross (salary maintenance). Check your agreement.
- 5During the stopover, you may not work or leave without medical authorization (except for medical care). Prohibition to leave the home without cause at the beaches fixed by the CPAM (often 10–17). Offence = end of YSS.
- 6Extension: if the stoppage is to be extended, the doctor will issue an extension before the end. Each extension is a new notice, sent to the CPAM/employer.
- 7Resumption: at the end of the stop, return to work. If the stoppage lasted ≥ 30 days, a return visit to the doctor at work is mandatory.
- 8Maternity/paternity/ATMP (labour accident) — separate schemes under more favourable conditions (without waiting period, higher IJ).
Common mistakes
Section actions
- Do not notify the employer from the first day — risk of loss of IJSS or sanctions.
- Working or leaving at closed hours — termination of benefits.
- Ignore the 3-day waiting period — the first days are not paid.
- Miss the resumption visit after a 30+ day stop — mandatory.
- Do not check the collective agreement — a continuing employer may apply.

Important remark
Conditions for stopping illness and IJSS depend on your contract and agreement. This information is indicative — for your case, check on Ameli and with the employer.
