Who this guide is for

Section actions
  • You if ADSL is slow and you want fiber optics
  • You if you just moved in and subscribe to the internet for the first time
  • You if you want to change operator (Orange, Free, SFR, Bouygues) with fiber

To be prepared in advance

Section actions
  • Specific address of the accommodation (with apartment number, floor)
  • Verification of eligibility on the operator's website or logininternet.arcep.fr
  • RIB for automatic sampling

Step-by-step procedure

Section actions
  1. 1Check eligibility on logininternet.arcep.fr (official Arcep website) — enter the address, it will display the available operators (Orange, Free, SFR, Bouygues, locals). If not eligible — information on planned deployment.
  2. 2Compare the packages on mycomparator.arcep.fr (official comparison). Key parameters: throughput (400 Mbit/s, 1 Gbit/s, 2 Gbit/s, 8 Gbit/s), TV, phone, without commitment or 12 months. Price 25–50 €/month.
  3. 3Sign up for the contract online or in an operator shop. Exhibits: ID, RIB, address. The operator sends confirmation and summons for the installation.
  4. 4On the day of installation — the technician intervenes (usually half a day). It sets the PTO (Optical Terminal Point) — fiber wall socket, usually in the living room or office. In the apartment — Wi-Fi box or Ethernet cable.
  5. 5In group housing (apartment): if the building is not yet cabled in fiber — coordinate with the trustee, ask via the town hall or operator for deployment (6–24 months).
  6. 6Individual accommodation (house): if fibre to pylons/PTO is possible — free installation by the technician. If work (sliced) is required — 0–500 € depending on distance.
  7. 7After installation — check the flow rate with a speedtest (speedtest.net, nperf.com). If the actual flow rate <80 % of the promised — signal to the operator, who has to correct.
  8. 8In case of a move: use the "Movement" service on service-public.fr (free) — it notifies the operator, who transfers the contract to the new address if eligible; otherwise — cancellation without charge (if the new address is not covered).
  9. 9For the lessor: for rent, you are not required to provide the fibre — but the lessee may request the installation (law Elan 2018, article 7-1 — the lessee is entitled to the installation of the fibre with the agreement of the owner).

Common mistakes

Section actions
  • Subscribe a package without checking eligibility — you may receive ADSL instead of fibre.
  • Do not check maconnexioninternet.arcep.fr — other sites may be obsolete.
  • Believe that "up to 1 Gbit/s" = 1 Gbit/s real — generally 60–80 % Wi-Fi.
  • Enter a commitment from 12 months if a move is planned — cancellation fee 50–300 €.
  • Do not check the TV in the package if necessary — a TV-free package is cheaper but difficult to complete afterwards.

Important remark

Fibre coverage and tariffs are changing. Indicative information; check on maconnexioninternet.arcep.fr and the operator's website.
