After birth: documents and organizations

Arrange for the following declaration, affiliation and steps depending on the place of birth and the situation of the parents.

Official sources consulted : .

Conditions, costs and deadlines according to the procedure and your situation. This guide helps to prepare; the competent department decides.

For preparation

1. Birth in France

The declaration is made at the town hall of the place of birth. In general: five days after delivery, with postponement of the last non-working day and exceptions in certain communes of Guyana. Check with maternity and town hall.

2. filiation depends on the situation

Declaration and recognition are distinct. For an unmarried father, check the recognition; for a couple of women after AMP, the specific notarial acts. Have the existing acts checked in the town hall or at the notary.

3. Getting useful actions

Ask for the type of birth certificate and update of the family booklet if applicable. Check names and dates. For a foreign authority, confirm translation, apostille or legalization.

4. Health insurance and benefits

Report the child to your caisse; depending on the situation, attach to both insured parents. Inform CAF/MSA separately and supplement. The birth certificate does not automatically open any benefits.

5. Foreign nationality and birth abroad

Born in France does not always automatically confer French nationality. Foreign parents: check nationality and documents at the competent consulate. Outside Canada, distinguish between local act and French declaration/transcription when it applies.
