Who this guide is for

Section actions
  • Foreigners who have held a residence permit for at least 18 months
  • Families providing for the arrival of the spouse and children under the age of 18
  • People who set up a file for OFII and the prefecture

To be prepared in advance

Section actions
  • Current residence permit and 12 month proof of resources
  • Decent and adequate housing justification (generally 22–28 m² for a couple + ~10 m² per person plus)
  • Marriage and birth certificates with apostille and sworn translation
  • Spouse and children's rooms for the VLS-TS at the Consulate upon agreement

Step-by-step procedure

Section actions
  1. 1Check the 18 months of residence in France with a valid title (service-public.fr, F11166).
  2. 2Control your income: the RSA and some aids do not count; the threshold depends on the size of the home.
  3. 3Prepare the accommodation: the town hall checks that it is decent and sufficient.
  4. 4Submit the file to OFII — via ANEF or on paper. Free deposit.
  5. 5Decision of the prefecture within 6 months. If you agree, the relatives ask for a VLS-TS at the consulate.
  6. 6After arrival, validation of the VLS-TS on ANEF within 3 months.

Common mistakes

Section actions
  • Deposit before 18 months of residence.
  • Believing that parents can come — single spouses and children under the age of 18.
  • Forget apostille and sworn translation.
  • Forget the validation of the VLS-TS after entering France.
