Background
Act No. 2026-813 of 24 August 2026, aimed at protecting minors from the risks associated with social networks, generalizes the prohibition of the use of mobile phones in high schools, whereas it already applied to schools and colleges since 2018. Each establishment must adapt its rules of procedure to define the practical arrangements for this prohibition, while providing for supervised derogations.
Why it's important
It is crucial that families and students understand these new rules in order to avoid sanctions and adapt to the organization of the school. This directly affects the daily school life and the organisation of high schools, especially in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region.
What Changes
The ban on the use of mobile phones and connected objects is extended to high schools from the beginning of the new school year 2026. The rules of procedure of each high school must specify the methods of implementing this prohibition.
Useful details
- Method of implementation that the high school must indicate: individual lockers to drop the phone on arrival; collective box to collect the phones of several students; individual pouch that the student locks at the entrance and unlocks at the exit.
- Exceptions: Each institution may provide for its own derogations in the rules of procedure; in addition, the law systematically permits use for a medical reason (including disability or disabling health disorder).
- Measures in case of non-compliance: Staff must provide a graduated, personalized and proportionate response, such as confiscation of the object or a disciplinary sanction in case of recidivism. High schools with upper sections (BTS, CPGE) can allow use for these students.
