Discrimination at work and in housing

Prepare facts and evidence to expose the situation to the appropriate department and choose an approach.

Conditions, costs and deadlines according to the procedure and your situation. This guide helps to prepare; the competent department decides.

For preparation

1. Distinguish Refusal and Reason

A refusal does not alone prove discrimination. Note the suspected prohibited criterion: origin, sex, disability, for example. Compare the explanations to the actual requirements of the position or accommodation.

2. Keeping the facts

Keep adverts, emails and dated messages. Distinguish observations and assumptions. Keep the originals; send only the necessary copies.

3. For work

Identify recruitment, remuneration, promotion or dismissal. Consult staff representatives, labour inspectorate or lawyer. Labour disputes and criminal complaints follow separate procedures and deadlines.

4. For housing

Keep file, criteria and answer from the lessor or agency. Ask for a written explanation. Enter the Defender of Rights through its official channel; the ADIL informs about rental issues.

5. Follow the chosen procedure

Help from the Defender of Rights is free. Check parallel actions and delays with a professional: this referral does not automatically replace a legal remedy. Keep reference and chronology.
