Who this guide is for

Section actions
  • Students (licence, master) seeking affordable housing
  • Foreign students (exchange program, Campus France) with tight budget
  • Low-income or social-based students

To be prepared in advance

Section actions
  • Student Account Number (Message/Student Account) or FSD
  • Tuition certificate or letter of admission
  • Family income information (for social priority)

Step-by-step procedure

Section actions
  1. 1Submit your application via the DSE (Social Student Account) on courier.crous.fr between January and May for the following year. This is the mandatory window — out of time, chances are low.
  2. 2Indicate your preferences: city, type of accommodation (traditional room, renovated room, T1, T2), residence. In AURA, the application goes to the CROUS of Lyon, Grenoble, Saint-Étienne, Chambéry, Clermont according to the place of study.
  3. 3Priority is given to socially vulnerable students: scholarship holders on social criteria, foreigners in exchange, students with disabilities. Mention all the reasons in the FSD.
  4. 4Receive a proposal by e-mail (often June–July). If appropriate, confirm within the time limit (often 8 days). After this period, the place is re-attributed.
  5. 5Sign the lease and deposit. The CROUS accommodation is a classic lease (9 month for students, or 12), eligible for the APL.
  6. 6Initially, give the contract notice (often 1 months) and provide an update. The deposit is returned under normal conditions.

Common mistakes

Section actions
  • Missing the FSD window (January–May) — housing becomes almost inaccessible.
  • Do not indicate social reasons (burden, disability) — priority is lost.
  • Do not confirm the proposal in time — the place is reassigned.
  • Believe accommodation CROUS free or automatic for any student. No — you have to file an application and wait.
  • Forget about the APL: the CROUS housing is entitled to the APL, but you have to ask yourself at the CAF.
