1For the French: the NSS is automatically assigned to the registration of the birth certificate at INSEE. Available on birth certificate and Vitale card.
2For foreigners: open the rights in CPAM via the application for entitlement — form S1106, birth certificate, residence permit, proof of domicile, RIB. The CPAM assigns the NSS after instruction.
3Check the NSS: on the certificate CPAM (on ameli.fr), the Vitale card, the birth certificate (French), the payroll.
4NSS structure: 1 (sex) + 2 (year of birth) + 2 (month) + 2 (department) + 3 (common INSEE) + 3 (order) + 2 (control key).
5Use the NSS for: CPAM (Vitale card), CAF, taxes, retirement (CNAV), bank, employer (DPAE), school.
6Protection: NSS is a sensitive data, do not communicate it without necessity. Beware of scams (CPAM does not call to request NSS by phone).
7In case of loss: request the attestation CPAM on ameli.fr or address yourself in CPAM. For children — via the town hall/CPAM.

Do not open the rights CPAM thinking that the NSS assigns itself — for foreigners, an application is necessary.
Communicate the NSS to third parties — scam risk.
Do not check the NSS on the CPAM certificate before giving it to the CAF/tax.
Believe the NSS = tax number. These are separate numbers.
