Who this guide is for

Section actions
  • You if you work and a mutual company is offered to you
  • You if you want to buy a private mutual and compare
  • You if your income is modest and you want to know the free CSS

To be prepared in advance

Section actions
  • Vitale card, contract (for mutual enterprise)
  • Knowledge of your needs (optical, dental, hospitalization)
  • Comparison of offers (comparators, mutuals)

Step-by-step procedure

Section actions
  1. 1Set the context: for employees — mandatory company mutual (50 % paid by the employer, 50 % paid by you). For the self-employed/unemployed — private mutual.
  2. 2For low income — CSS (see the css-demand guide), free or almost. Check eligibility.
  3. 3Compare covers: basic (moderator ticket) vs extended (excesses, optical/dental packages). 100 % Health allows free glasses and dental prostheses.
  4. 4Check the subscription (monthly) and the ceilings. Cheap mutuals can have low coverage.
  5. 5Sign the contract and provide the RIB for the levy. For mutual enterprise — automatically formalised when hiring.
  6. 6Use the mutual card (or third-party card) at doctors and pharmacies—automatically paid third party (without remaining charge).
  7. 7Renewal/resiliation: the mutual enterprise may be extended upon dismissal (Evin Law) with an increase. Private persons may be terminated annually (Chatel law) or in the event of a change of situation.

Common mistakes

Section actions
  • Ignore mutual enterprise (mandatory) — the employer must propose it.
  • Take the minimum coverage without assessing needs — high load leftovers.
  • Do not check the right to free CSS — pay for nothing.
  • Do not use the mutual card — pay for the rest, difficult to get reimbursed.
  • Ignore the Chatel law (possibility of termination) — overpay.
