Who this guide is for

Section actions
  • If you need a specialist and don't know how to make an appointment
  • You if you want to understand the care path and the reimbursement
  • You if you have an urgent problem and want a quick consultation

To be prepared in advance

Section actions
  • Vital card and mutual card
  • Guidance of the attending physician (letter of guidance) — usually required
  • Symptoms and Background (for consultation)

Step-by-step procedure

Section actions
  1. 1Consult the attending physician first: he evaluates and, if necessary, issues a letter of guidance to the specialist. Without it — less CPAM reimbursement (sector 2 with overruns).
  2. 2Make an appointment via Doctolib (doctolib.fr) — main service in France. Choose a specialist sector 1 for a maximum refund.
  3. 3Present yourself with Vital Card and mutual card: the specialist makes the consultation (~30 € sector 1, up to ~50–80 € sector 2). Third party paying possible under conditions.
  4. 4Reimbursement CPAM: 70 % of base rate (60 % off course of care), the mutual covers the rest. In ALD — 100 %.
  5. 5Urgent cases: Directly to emergencies or to a specialist without guidance, but the reimbursement may be less.
  6. 6The specialist may prescribe examinations (biology, imaging) — refunded CPAM. Keep the prescription.
  7. 7Long delays: some specialists (psychiatrist, dermatologist in the big city) have months to wait. Anticipate or look for alternatives (health centres, teleconsultation).

Common mistakes

Section actions
  • Go to the specialist without guidance — reduced reimbursement.
  • Choose 2 sector without checking overruns — more expensive.
  • Do not bring the Vital Card — no automatic paying third parties.
  • Do not keep orders and reports — necessary for the following steps.
  • Tarder to consult a specialist for serious symptoms.
