Who this guide is for

Section actions
  • You if you want a common account with your partner
  • You if you are roommates and want to share rent/charges
  • You if you hesitate between joint and individual account

To be prepared in advance

Section actions
  • The identity documents of all future holders
  • A proof of domicile (common or individual)
  • A decision on the plan (attached "or"/"and") and the account agreement

Step-by-step procedure

Section actions
  1. 1Determine the plan: joint account "or" (each acts alone — common for couples) vs. "and" (all must consent) to place large amounts of money.
  2. 2Compare offers: online banks often free of charge, traditional banks more services. Check the subscription, card ceilings, insurance.
  3. 3Open in bank: CNI/passport of each, proof of domicile, sometimes tax notice. Sign the account agreement.
  4. 4Receive cards and access from everyone. Everyone has their own credit card and online access, but the account is unique.
  5. 5Liability: in joint account "or", each one is jointly and severally responsible for ALL debts (incidents, uncovered). If one commits an incident, the other pays.
  6. 6Use it for common expenses (rent, expenses, races). Keep personal accounts for individual money.
  7. 7In case of a break: block the account (opposition), share the funds. The bank requires the agreement of all holders for the closure.
  8. 8Taxation: Account revenues are reported by holders on a pro rata basis (for a couple — 50/50 by default).
  9. 9For situations independent of the family — undivided account (shares "and") or individual accounts with transfers.

Common mistakes

Section actions
  • Open without discussing rules — conflicts.
  • Ignore joint responsibility — one leaves the debt to the other.
  • To believe a separate card = personal account. No, the funds are common.
  • Do not block at breakup — the other may withdraw funds.
  • Failure to report income properly — tax matters.
