Who this guide is for

Section actions
  • New arrivals improving their French for life and work
  • Foreigners to pass the language assessment of OFII (integration contract)
  • Students and professionals preparing DELF/DALF or professional French

To be prepared in advance

Section actions
  • Level assessment: TCF, DCL or the school's placement test when you enrol
  • Residence permit or another supporting document if you apply for free courses
  • A clear goal: everyday life, work or DELF/DALF

Step-by-step procedure

Section actions
  1. 1First check whether you are eligible for a free OFII course. This usually depends on your integration contract.
  2. 2If you cannot get a free course, compare Alliance Française, GRETA and university centres such as CUEFLE.
  3. 3Compare the format as well as the price: group or individual classes, in person or online, daytime or evening.
  4. 4For work-related French, look for courses called français professionnel or français sur objectif spécifique.
  5. 5If you need a qualification, ask about DELF/DALF preparation from the outset.
  6. 6Plan to practise outside class. Progress is usually much slower without regular practice.

Common mistakes

Section actions
  • Paying for a course when you could get a free place through OFII.
  • Choosing a timetable you cannot manage alongside work and family commitments.
  • Expecting progress without speaking French between classes.
